Why the average position is the interesting column

The size of a book tells you how much money a firm runs. Dividing it by the number of positions tells you what kind of firm it is, and the two ends of that column are almost different industries.

A manager with a very large average position holds few names and has to be right about each one. A manager with a very small average holds thousands and is running a statistical process where being right 52% of the time is the whole business. Both can be excellent. Only one of them is worth reading position by position, and it is not the one whose largest holding changes because a model said so.

What this figure is not

It is not assets under management. A 13F covers US-listed equity and equity derivatives, and that is all. It excludes cash, bonds, foreign listings, private holdings and short positions. A firm running a hundred billion dollars mostly in credit will appear small here, correctly, because that is not what the form asks about.

It is not "money at risk", for the option-heavy filers. Where a fund files puts and calls, those are reported at the notional value of the underlying, so the filed total for a market maker is not comparable with the filed total for a long-only manager. We split the two apart on each fund's own page for exactly this reason.

It is not current. Filed up to 45 days after quarter end, and read by you some time after that.

Every fund, ranked and searchable.

Educational information, not financial advice. Every figure on this page is read from the source filings when the page loads, not written into the article, so what you are reading is today's data and not a snapshot of the day it was published.
