Who Runs Berkshire Hathaway Now?

The short answer. Greg Abel has been chief executive since January 2026. On 18 September 2026 Warren Buffett stepped down as chairman after 56 years and was succeeded by his son Howard Buffett, 71. Warren Buffett remains on the board as a director. Abel runs the company; the chairmanship is a stewardship role.

Checked 1 October 2026. Last change to the facts below: Warren Buffett's retirement as chairman on 18 September 2026. If those dates are far apart, the legislative position may have moved since this was last edited.

Warren Buffett's own description of the split, on announcing it: "Greg runs the company; Howard will guard its culture and values — both worth more than anything on our balance sheet."

Has Warren Buffett left Berkshire?

No. He gave up the chairmanship, not the board seat, and he remains Berkshire's largest individual shareholder. The distinction matters for anyone reading the portfolio: capital allocation sits with the chief executive and the investment managers, and it has done since January.

Read live from the 13F filings, so this is the most recent quarter on file rather than the position today. A 13F is a snapshot of the quarter end, published up to 45 days later.

Does a change of chairman change the portfolio?

Not directly, and the evidence for that is in the filings rather than in anyone's opinion: the largest single change of the last year — the Alphabet purchase — was made in the second quarter of 2026, with Abel already in the chief executive's chair and Buffett still chairman. The chairmanship changed in September; the portfolio had already moved.

What this page cannot tell you

What Berkshire owns today. A 13F shows long US-listed equity positions as at a quarter end, excludes bonds, cash, foreign listings and the wholly owned operating businesses — which, for Berkshire, is most of the company.
