Start from the income you want, not a number in the air. This works out the pot that income needs, whether your current saving gets there, and exactly what monthly amount would.
The pot target uses the 4% guideline (annual income times 25), a rule of thumb from US historical data, not a law of nature: sequence risk, fees and a long retirement can all argue for drawing less. In the UK, shelter the journey in an ISA (£20,000 allowance for 2026/27) and a pension or SIPP (£60,000 annual allowance, with tax relief on the way in). From April 2027 the cash ISA limit falls to £12,000 for under-65s; the overall £20,000 stays, the remainder must go to investments, which for a retirement horizon is usually right anyway.
