Does a company beating expectations mean the share price rises?

Frequently not, and the reason catches people out repeatedly. The published consensus is not the number the market is trading on. By the time a widely-followed company reports, the price already reflects an expectation that may sit well above or below the analyst figure — the so-called whisper number. A company can beat consensus and fall, because it did not beat what was actually priced in.

This is why the useful preparation before a print is not guessing the number. It is knowing what the price already assumes, which is a valuation question rather than a forecasting one.

What should you actually look at in a result?

  1. The guidance, not the quarter. The quarter is history; guidance is the only forward-looking statement in the release.
  2. Cash flow against reported profit. Persistent divergence between them is the single most reliable early warning in financial statements.
  3. The segment that is growing fastest. In a multi-line business, the average hides the story.
  4. What changed in the language. Companies rarely announce deterioration. They stop repeating a phrase.

What this cannot tell you

Dates move, particularly for smaller companies, and are confirmed by the company rather than by us. Expected growth is the analyst consensus for the full financial year, not for this quarter's print.
